Margins livestock farming under pressure

28/06/2018

Margins in dairy farming are under pressure due to a falling milk price. In the first five months of 2018, the milk price has dropped continuously: in May the price was 9% lower than in January. Pig farming also suffers from lesser results. The margins of fattening pigs in May is 25% below the long-term average. The margins of sow keeping is even 60% lower in May than in May 2017. After a positive first quarter, the margins of laying hens have fallen considerably: in May more than 11,000 euros lower than last year. Only broiler farms show a positive result; in May the margins are 5,400 euros higher than the same month last year.
