Potato prices increasing again |
22/08/2018 |
The consumer price for potatoes hit a low point in March 2018, but increased by 17% well into June. The farm-gate price, which reached a record high last year, has nearly halved since July 2017. As a result of the drought of the summer months, for the next season a small harvest and strongly increasing prices are expected for non-contracted potatoes.
The consumer price for eggs increased slightly in May and June to 15% above the level in June 2017. This is striking since the egg price for laying hen farms declined further the past two months (-19%). After the Fipronil crisis, production at the affected farms was restored and now almost all farms are in full production again.
Consumer prices for fruit and vegetables have decreased by 3% and 2% respectively in May and June. The consumer prices for products (bread, dairy, meat) in this period are stable.
These are some of the results of the Food Price Monitor of Wageningen Economic Research and Statistics Netherlands, which monitors the prices of a number of products in three links of the chain: consumer price (CPI), producer price (PPI) and farm-gate price (API). The PPI reflects the prices at which supermarkets by their produce. The information is quantified and updated monthly and this time a two-month period (May and June) is explained.
