Consumers pay top prices for beef and dairy |
18/10/2018 |
Consumer prices for beef and dairy reached a top level of respectively 107 and 108 points (2015=100). This means prices are almost 3% higher than last year in the same period. In July and August the average beef price increased by 2% and the average dairy price by 1%.
In the same period, consumer prices for potatoes increase by slightly more than 2% and vegetable prices decreased by a slightly more than 2%. Stable consumer prices could be found for bread, eggs, pork, poultry meat and fruit (increases or decreases smaller than 1%).
In general, farm-gate prices show stronger fluctuations than consumer prices. Noteworthy for July and August are the large price increases for potatoes (+71%) and wheat (+22%) due to modest harvests. Conversely, there were price decreases for eggs and slaughter cattle of 9% and 11%, respectively. The latter is remarkable, considering the high consumer price level.
These are some of the findings from the Food Price Monitor of Wageningen Economic Research and Statistics Netherlands. The commentary on the information covers the months of July and August. In November the figures for September will be added to the Monitor.
