Consumer pays less for bread, dairy and beef |
20/12/2018 |
Compared with August, consumers paid about 1% less for dairy, poultry meat and fresh fruit, and about 2% less for bread and beef. By contrast, there were price increases for potatoes (+1%), eggs (+2%) and fresh vegetables (+3%). The price increase for vegetables in autumn comes as no surprise. The increase for eggs, however, is surprising, considering the low farm-gate price. However, the farm-gate price saw a much stronger increase than the consumer price: the price index went from 80 in August to 97 in October (+21%). Although this has not closed the gap between the two price levels, the difference has been reduced. Farm-gate prices for potatoes and wheat moved into calmer waters, but are nevertheless respectively 76% and 25% above last year’s level due to bad harvests worldwide. The higher farm-gate price for potatoes has already been taken into account in the consumer price. This is not the case yet for bread due to current price contracts. These results appear from the bimonthly notes to the Food Price Monitor of Wageningen Economic Research and Statistics Netherlands. The figures are updated on a monthly basis.
