Ornamental plant cultivation severely hit by corona crisis |
24/04/2020 |
Around Valentine in 2020 there wasn’t much happening in the flower trade. Turnover of cut flowers was 2% higher in February than in February 2019, which was mainly due to a larger supply. However, from mid-March onward cut flower sales collapsed due to the global corona crisis. In all export destinations for ornamental products, far-reaching measures have been taken to contain the corona crisis, such as the closing of borders and shops. A large part of the market disappeared, causing problems in the whole chain. For the whole of March 2020, auction turnover for cut flowers was 37% lower. Sales of potted plants in March dropped by a similar percentage (-32%). The effects of the corona crisis are also visible in the sales of garden plants. In March, auction sales dropped by 23%. Normally, an important part of the sales of garden plants is realised in the period from March until April. |
