Less favourable prices in ornamentals sector

21/12/2020

After a summer with good price formation, the second corona wave appeared to redress the normal balance in the ornamentals market. From September through October, potted plants and garden plants surrendered some of their initial gains; especially in October/November, cut flowers had to deal with poor price formation, although large differences per product were possible.
In 2020, up to and including November, sales of cut flowers were 6,6% lower, with a 5.5% lower turnover, compared to the same period in 2019. Following the deep corona dip from March through May, there was a surprising recovery. However, prices for cut flowers decreased from the end of September.
At first, potted plants did not appear to suffer from the second corona wave. From the end of October, when more sales channels were closed, the market became saturated and prices went down.
Price formation for garden plants remains good. Up to and including November, all garden plants had an additional turnover of 10% compared to the same period in 2019, with on average a 17% higher price and a decrease in the numbers sold of 6%.
