Lower turnover of ornamentals |
24/02/2021 |
Turnover at FloraHolland of flowers grown in the Netherlands was 5% lower in 2020 over 2019. Despite a good recovery in May, this is due to the lockdown measures in several countries. For the whole of 2020, 6% fewer products were sold at an overall 1% lower price. What 2021 will bring in terms of flower sales is uncertain. In any case, January began with reasonable prices across the board at lower sales levels and a considerably lower auction turnover, partly due to two auction days less.
Turnover of house plants in January 2021 fell behind 2020. Turnover of potted plants in January was 3% lower than in 2020, which was mainly due to an 8% decrease in sales. For the whole of 2020, auction turnover of potted plants was more than 0.9% higher than in 2019. For garden plants, auction turnover for 2020 was 9.5% higher than in 2019. Sales of garden plants in January 2021 were also considerably lower than in 2020.
Export value falls
2021 did not start well, especially for the export of potted plants and garden plants, but also for cut flowers, which is where the effects of worldwide corona measures are clearly noticeable. Figures from research by Floridata, commissioned by the Association of Wholesalers in Flower Nursery Products (VGB), show that the export value of potted and garden plants fell behind by 15% and that of cut flowers by 8% over the value for January 2020.
In December 2020, the export value of potted and garden plants is 9% higher over 2019, resulting in a positive export value for the whole of 2020 of 2%. For cut flowers, 2020 saw less favourable results. The export value in December lags somewhat behind by 1% and for the whole of 2020 an 8% lower export value was realised, mainly caused by the effects of the first corona measures and insufficient recovery in the period after.
