Highest retail price increase for dairy |
21/05/2021 |
Consumer prices in February and March 2021 were stable. There was little or no increase in prices of potatoes, eggs, beef and pork in this period. It is worth noting that the price of dairy increased by 2%. Individual dairy products such as fresh milk, yogurt, cheese and quark contributed to this increase, except for long-life milk. Retail prices of bread and fresh fruit also increased the past two months, by 1%. In these months, vegetable prices decreased by almost 4%. Behind the calm price development during this period, eggs in supermarkets remained expensive, whereas consumer prices of fresh potatoes and pork were at a low level.
Farm-gate and industry prices in the pork chain recovered in February and March. However, Dutch potato growers and processors are still suffering the consequences of the corona pandemic and the reduced global demand for frozen chips. This suppresses the farm-gate prices of potatoes, also of fresh potatoes. The corona pandemic does not seem to affect the wheat market. Demand for wheat remains stable and the decreased world supplies have led to the highest grower price since 2013.
