Exceptional turnover and export figures for floriculture |
30/06/2021 |
Auction turnover of cut flowers grown in the Netherlands is persistently high, according to figures provided by auction FloraHolland. Also in April and May 2021, turnover was higher than in 2020. The increase in turnover of cut flowers in April was still a combination of a larger number of sold pieces and a higher price. In May, the higher turnover was solely due to a higher average price paid for cut flowers.
Auction turnover for Dutch potted plants was also exceptionally high with an increase by 120 million euros in two months. In April and May of this year, Royal FloraHolland's auction turnover for potted plants increased by 93% and 19%, respectively, compared with last year. In both months, turnover for garden plants grown in the Netherlands also exceeded 100 million euros, which is unprecedented.
Floriculture exports were also exceptionally high the past two months, according to figures from Floridata and the Dutch Association of Wholesalers in Floricultural Products (VGB). What was already ongoing, continued in April and May of this year. Exports of ornamental products such as cut flowers, potted plants, border plants and tree nursery products increased in April and May by respectively 74% and 25%.
A comparison with last year is somewhat flawed due to the corona crisis, which was only a few months old then. In that period, supply restrictions were in place at the flower auction and in several countries sales channels were blocked or sales were lower. This year's strong growth was the result of, among others, the celebration of Mother's Day in several European countries and working from home. Also in comparison with previous years, the export figures for 2021 are exceptional.
