Dairy, poultry meat and eggs priced high

22/09/2021

The highest food price increase took place in June and July among ware potatoes: the consumer price increased by 13%. Nevertheless, potatoes are still priced 6% lower than in the same period last year. Compared to May, the price of vegetables decreased by 2%. Consumer prices of dairy, eggs, beef, pork and bread hardly changed in June and July. The price index for dairy increased somewhat, but at 144 points it remains at the same level as last year (2015=100). At 145 points, the price index for eggs remained at a record high and also the price of poultry meat is back at the high level of last year (118 points).

The Corona pandemic has had a negative impact on several farm-gate prices. Thanks to a relaxation of the measures prices are now recovering. Potato volumes in the potato processing industry are back to pre-Corona levels again. In 2020, 20% fewer potatoes were processed than usual. For potato growers, prices are also recovering: in July the price index reached 108 points, which is 36% higher than last year. The farm-gate prices of poultry meat were at a low level in the first months of the year. A considerable price increase of 5% took place in June and July.

These results appear from the bimonthly notes to the Food Price Monitor of Wageningen Economic Research and Statistics Netherlands.
