Costs and revenues livestock farming continue to rise

05/01/2023

In the livestock sectors, sharp fluctuations in costs and revenues again led to major movements in November's operating results. For example, the uncertainty concerning the war in Ukraine, a major exporter of grains, is still causing feed prices to rise sharply compared to the previous year. On the revenue side, however, significantly higher prices for milk, free-range eggs, broilers and, to a lesser extent, fattening pigs and slaughter sows were also observed.

The balance of the standardized dairy farm amounted to 31,300 euros in November 2022. The balance was thus 71% higher than the same month of the previous year and 81% above the long-term average for this month. The milk price has risen from less than 35 euros at the beginning of 2021 to 62 euros per 100 kg in November 2022. On the other hand, the allocated costs were also the highest in November, when they were 43% above the ten-year average and had almost tripled compared to 2001.
The balance of laying hens was significantly higher in November 2022 at more than 110,000 euros per farm. That is eight times above the level observed in November last year. This was mainly due to the favourable price of free-range eggs, which at 2.35 euros per kg in November was well above the price level a year earlier. The contract price of broilers in November was 39% higher than in the same period last year. The broiler balance rose, partly as a result of the higher contract price, to 42,200 euros per farm. The balance was therefore more than 70% above the long-term average for 2012-2021.

The balance of fattening pigs in November 2022 was higher than the same month in 2021. Compared to the previous year, the balance increased by 2,400 euros to 12,250 euros. Both revenues and costs were considerably higher in November than in the previous year. The price of fattening pigs rose in November 2022 to an average of 1.84 euros per kg. Nevertheless, in November the progressive annual balance was 34 euros per fattening pig per year, below the long-term average balance of 70 euros.

In November 2022, the balance of sow farming was 47,000 euros higher than during the same month of the previous year. This is because revenues have risen more than costs. The balance of 17,000 euros was still a quarter below the long-term average of 2012-2021, however. Following the higher fattening pig price, the price of slaughter sows in November was also considerably higher than last year and is 27% above the long-term average. In November, the rolling annual balance of sow farming amounted to 91 euros per sow, against a long-term average of 504 euros per sow.
