Retail prices show lower prices for chicken, fresh vegetables and fresh fruit this period; beef prices in particular continue to rise |
11/07/2025 |
Over the months of April-May 2025, retail prices of chicken and fresh fruit fell by about 1%. Fresh vegetable prices fell by just under 5%. The price of dairy products remained almost unchanged. Prices of potatoes, bread, eggs and pork showed a limited increase of around 1%. The price of beef increased the most at around 11%. Thus, the CPI across this broad product group does seem to be stabilising. However, there are large differences between products. Between May 2024 and May 2025, beef prices rose by 22% and pork also became considerably more expensive at 8% in one year. The price for poultry meat seems to stabilise slightly again in recent months, but remains at a high level compared to past years. Average price inflation for the food, drinks and tobacco category rose 7.0% in May 2025 compared to May 2024, CBS said. This is well above the European harmonised consumer price index, which stood at 3.3% for this product group in May this year.
These findings are based on the bimonthly commentary from the Food Price Monitor by Wageningen Social & Economic Research and Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
