Slight increase only in prices of eggs and beef

06/04/2021

Consumer prices of eggs and beef increased in December 2020 and January 2021 by respectively 1 and 2%. There is an increased demand for eggs in supermarkets due to the corona crisis and eggs remain expensive. Beef prices are also at a high level: since 2017, beef prices have steadily increased. Furthermore, prices of fresh vegetables remained the same for consumers, whereas prices of pork, bread, potatoes, dairy, poultry meat and fresh fruit decreased in this period. With the exception of pork, the price decrease was 2% at most.

The price of pork decreased in December 2020 by 6% and marked time after the turn of the year. That decrease followed a larger decrease in revenues of pig slaughterhouses and in farm-gate prices since April last year. The price of dairy dropped by 2%; the price level is comparable to that of two years ago. The decrease in the dairy price is not attributed to fresh or long-life milk, but is mainly caused by a decrease in the prices of yogurt (-1%), cheese and quark (-3%), and other dairy products (-2%).

These results appear from the bimonthly notes to the Food Price Monitor of Wageningen Economic Research and Statistics Netherlands.
