Further increase in exports of ornamentals and auction turnovers

13/01/2022

The export value of flowers and plants in September, October and November 2021 was at a record high. These results appear from the export figures published by Floridata, commissioned by the Dutch Association of Wholesalers in Floricultural Products (VGB). The strong increase relates to both price and volume. The export value of flower and plants up to and including November is 23% higher than in 2020. The export of cut flowers is somewhat above this percentage (+26%), whereas that of indoor and garden plants is slightly lower (+18%). Auction turnovers of ornamentals grown in the Netherlands show similar growth rates, according to figures from Royal FloraHolland. The sales increase in 2021 is partly due to the two poor months in 2020 at the beginning of the corona pandemic. The strong lack of demand led the auction to enforce supply restrictions. Customer demand was also high in 2021. Turnover of cut flowers up to and including November is 29% higher than in 2020, thanks to a higher price level of almost 22% and a 5% higher volume. The turnover of potted plants up to and including November is 17% higher over 2020, due to a 9% higher supply and a price increase of 7.5%. With an increase of slightly less than 19%, also the turnover of garden plants is far higher than last year, mainly due to the 11.5% higher volume.
