Drop in export of ornamentals and auction turnover in March

05/05/2022

In March 2022, the exports of flowers and plants fell back significantly after a good start of the year. Compared to 2021, January saw an increase of 26% and February a plus of 11%, but in March there was a decrease of 15%. These results appear from the figures published by Floridata, commissioned by the Dutch Association of Wholesalers in Floricultural Products (VGB). Also, the auction turnovers reported by Royal Floraholland of cut flowers, potted plants and garden plants grown in the Netherlands show large decreases for March. Several explanations can be put forward: lower supplies due to higher energy costs and lower sales due to a different public holiday calendar, the war in Ukraine and the increasing inflation.

The auction turnover of cut flowers grown in the Netherlands was a third lower in March 2022 than a year previously. Turnover in the first quarter was about 8% lower than in 2021. Numbers sold decreased by 12% at on average 4% higher prices. Turnover of potted plants in March was more than 20% lower than in 2021, especially due to lower numbers sold (-19%). The cumulative turnover of potted plants only barely increased: the higher price (+6%) compensated the lower supply (-5%). The turnover of garden plants in the first quarter was below the level of last year (-4%). The lower supply (-9%) could only be partially compensated by a higher average price (5%).
