Consumer prices rise slightly, except for fruit and vegetables |
25/09/2025 |
Consumer prices for fresh vegetables and fresh fruit are lower in this period. For all other products, consumer prices continue to (slightly) increase, with beef showing the strongest rise.
Between May and July 2025, retail prices of fresh fruit and fresh vegetables fell by around 1% and 2% respectively. The consumer price for pork remained virtually unchanged, while the prices of potatoes and bread showed a modest increase of about 1%. Eggs, poultry meat and dairy products rose by between 1.5% and 3%. Beef prices recorded the sharpest increase, at around 6%. Consumer prices for animal-based product groups remain historically high, with no sign of a turnaround for the time being – except in the case of pork, where both farm-gate and producer prices have shown a clear decline in recent months.
According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), average price inflation for the category food, beverages and tobacco stood at 4.1% in July 2025 compared to July 2024. This is well above the European harmonised index of consumer prices, which came to 3.3% for this product group in July this year.
These findings are drawn from the bimonthly commentary on the Food Prices Monitor, produced by Wageningen Social & Economic Research and CBS.
