The pig farming sector has traditionally been concentrated in the sandy regions in the central, southern and eastern parts of the Netherlands. Historically speaking, favourable conditions have encouraged poultry farmers to settle in these regions. This brought about more intensive animal farming practices and thus higher production per unit of surface area. The mediocre quality of the ground is not suited to large-scale land-based activities. However, some cultivation of sweet corn as a feed concentrate for private use does take place.
