Floricultural export and auction turnover declined, turnover for potted plants shows signs of recovery

15/05/2023

The export of flowers and plants has decreased slightly in the first quarter of 2023 compared to last year. The export value of flowers and plants was approximately 694 million euros in February 2023, a decrease of 10% compared to the same month in 2022. In March 2023, the export value reached 751 million euros (+1%). This was the first time the export value had grown since April 2022. These figures are based on export data published by Floridata, commissioned by the Association of Wholesalers in Flower Nursery Products (VGB).

The auction turnover of domestically grown cut flowers in the first quarter of 2023 has decreased (-4%) compared to the previous year. Particularly in February 2023, there was a significant drop in turnover (-15%) for flowers from the Netherlands at Royal FloraHolland. However, in March 2023, there was an increase in turnover (+9%), partly due to strong demand and higher average prices for cut flowers.

The auction turnover of domestically grown potted plants at the Royal FloraHolland auction has also decreased in the first quarter of 2023 (-2%). Until February 2023, the auction turnover was still 5.5% lower than the previous year. The turnover of Dutch potted plants had not increased since February 2022. The increase in turnover (+5%) in March 2023 seems to mark the beginning of a recovery. The rise in turnover in March was driven by both higher average prices and an increase in supply.

The turnover at the flower auction Royal FloraHolland of garden plants grown in the Netherlands has decreased in the first quarter of 2023 (-8%), compared to the previous year. A relatively mild winter resulted in an increase in sales volume (+2%) and a slight rise in average prices in February 2023, leading to a slight increase in turnover for that month (+3%). However, in March 2023, the auction turnover for garden plants was significantly lower (-12%) than the previous year. The poor results in March heavily impacted the total auction turnover for the first quarter.
