Prices of potatoes, beef and pork unprecedentedly high |
08/08/2023 |
In May compared to March, the retail price of potatoes rose by 6%, pork by 2% and beef by 1%. The price of bread, dairy, eggs and poultry meat hardly changed. Fruit and vegetable prices fell 10% and 3%, respectively.
Shop prices seem to stabilise somewhat, but they are at a high level compared to March last year. Furthermore, potato prices have never been this high since 2010, and the same applies to beef and pork. In the beef chain, the industry price and the farm-gate price are falling, but in the pork chain, the industry price has gone up by another 10% in these two months and the farm-gate price by 3%. The potato grower price also went up sharply by 33%. These may be harbingers of higher prices in the shop.
These results appear from the bimonthly notes to the Food Price Monitor of Wageningen Economic Research and Statistics Netherlands.
