Despite fluctuating results during the summer months, the cumulative export value of flowers and plants in 2023 is 3.7% lower than the previous year. In June, there was a slight increase of 0.5% compared to June 2022, but July and August witnessed respective declines of 2.6% and 5.5%. Cumulatively, the export value of plants decreased less sharply (-2.5%) than that of cut flowers (-4.5%). These figures are based on export data published by Floridata, commissioned by the Association of Wholesalers in Flower Nursery Products (VGB).
The turnover of domestically grown cut flowers, after eight months in 2023, was 5% lower than the previous year, according to figures from the Royal Floraholland auction. The main reason for this was a 7.1% decrease in the number of cut flowers sold, although the average flower price experienced a slight increase of 2.4%. Weather conditions and shifts in supplied quantities influenced these numbers, with certain cut flower varieties such as spray chrysanthemums and peonies seeing significant price fluctuations.
The cumulative turnover of domestically grown potted plants at Royal Floraholland took a positive turn during the summer months. After a deficit of 1.4% after five months in 2023, the turnover recovered to an increase of 1% after eight months. This improvement was driven by price increases. June, July, and August witnessed respective turnover increases of 7%, 12%, and 4%. The month of June, which had an additional auction day, and sunny weather conditions in May and June influenced these results.
The turnover of domestically grown garden plants at the Royal FloraHolland auction during the summer months was primarily higher than in 2022 due to an increased average price. A shift in the assortment may have contributed to this. In the first five months, the turnover increased by 4% compared to a year earlier. This lead, including the months of June, July, and August, doubled to 8%. |
