Downward trend in food prices |
23/11/2023 |
Food retail prices dropped in August and September, with the exception of fruit, which rose in price by 1%. The biggest drop was beef with a decline of 5%. The prices of potatoes and dairy fell 3%, the prices of bread, pork and chicken meat dipped 2%. Eggs and fresh vegetables remained almost the same in price. For the time being, retail prices are still far above the price level of early 2022.
In the supply chains of potatoes, dairy, beef, pork and poultry meat, farm and processing prices also fell. Grower prices for potatoes fell by a significant 45% in these months and the biggest drop was seen in the industry price of pork ( (5%).
In the bread and egg supply chains industrial and trade prices went up, while grower prices fell 4% for wheat, and farm gate egg prices rose 4%.
This is evident from the bimonthly explanation of the food price monitor of Wageningen Economic Research and CBS.
