Overall retail prices stayed at a high level. This applies in particular to the prices of bread, eggs, pork and poultry meat. They barely decreased in 2023.
The farm gate price of wheat, on the other hand, fell sharply over the last year, as did the price of raw milk. The farm gate prices are respectively 30% and 26% lower than in January 2023. The grain price is low, despite limited stocks in the world, because supply is back on track and production expectations are favourable. Farm gate prices of beef and poultry meat are both 12% lower than a year ago. The farm gate price of pork also fell, but is 8% higher than a year ago. Pig production decreased in the past two years due to high feed prices, outbreaks of African swine fever and increasing animal welfare requirements.
