Potatoes show the highest price increase

15/07/2024

The retail price of fresh potatoes rose by 4% over the months of April and May. The price of poultry meat rose by 2%. The retail prices of bread, milk, eggs, and beef and pork have hardly changed in these months. Prices of fresh fruit and vegetables fell by 3% in the run-up to the summer. Potatoes therefore experience the strongest price increase. Retail prices have remained at a higher price level since the beginning of 2022, with the exception of fresh (semi-)skimmed milk, which saw a sharp decline in the autumn of 2023. However, the dairy price index is still 25% higher compared to 2022.

Farm prices are more volatile. Compared to March, growers of wheat received 16% higher prices in May, but the farm price for egg producers fell by 12%. Fresh potato growers received a 17% higher price. The potato processing industry also paid higher prices to their suppliers to secure the supply of fries on the world market and had to increase their industry prices by 2%
