Potato prices rise again |
25/09/2024 |
The retail price of potatoes increased further in the months of June and July. Consumers paid 8% more for potatoes in July than in May. The prices of pork and dairy also rose during this period, by 3 and 1% respectively. The prices of bread, poultry meat and fresh fruit remained the same. The price of beef and vegetables fell by 1% and the price of eggs fell by 2%.
Striking in the food supply chain is that the farm-gate price of potatoes increased by more than 54%. Potato prices rise every year before the new harvest, but this increase is exceptional. The reasons for this increase are the limited stocks available from the previous season in combination with the wet spring, which caused late sowing of the potato seeds. The drop in egg prices fits the seasonal pattern. The packing station price of eggs also fell by 4%. During the summer the demand for eggs is usually lower because holidays and high temperatures lead to less home baking.
