Only fresh fruit and poultry meat slightly more expensive |
27/11/2024 |
Retail prices of fresh fruit and poultry meat both increased by 1% over August and September. These are the strongest risers in this period. The strongest decliners are fresh vegetables, potatoes and eggs. Their prices fell by 4%. Bread and dairy prices fell by 1%. The prices of pork and beef remained about the same.
After a rapid growth of the potato price in the run-up to the new harvest, the price has now dropped slightly because harvests are on average better than expected. The retail price follows the farm-gate price with a delay and with a strongly dampened effect. The decline in egg prices in this consecutive period falls still within the seasonal pattern. The calm trend in beef retail prices hides the fact that the supply of cattle from livestock farming to the slaughterhouses is greater this year, but the demand for beef is keeping pace at the same time. Therefore consumer prices remained high. Retail prices will rise towards Christmas if the supply of cattle does not increase.
