Organic farms have a divergent farm structure and a more stable milk price |
25/04/2018 |
Slightly more than 2% of the cows in the Netherlands are organically raised. This share has however slightly increased over the past years. Organic dairy farms are more extensive and have a lower milk yield per cow. What distinguishes organic farmers from their conventional colleagues is the absence of chemical pesticides. Organic farms are obliged to put their cows out to pasture, in contrast to conventional farms. The higher price for organic milk in 2016 led to higher incomes on organic dairy farms. Due to more extensive farming methods, organic farms have a higher cost price. The presented analysis is based on figures from the Farm Accountancy Data Network of Wageningen Economic Research. |
