Exports of flowers and plants stabilise

The exports of cut flowers were 2% higher in January than in 2018, according to Floridata. Export turnovers for potted plants in January 2019 were similar to those of 2018. The total value of exports of flowers and plants from the Netherlands amounted to about 6 billion euros in 2018, which was the same as in 2017. While exports of potted plants increased, the exports of cut flowers decreased. The value of exports to the United Kingdom and France declined by respectively more than 2% and 3%. Lower auction turnovers for cut flowers were affected by the hot summer, when prices were under pressure. In January 2019, auction turnovers for cut flowers amounted to 146 million euros. The average price was somewhat higher than in January 2018. In December, turnovers lagged due to considerably lower sales at the end of 2018 than in 2017. Sales of potted plants were more prosperous. The average price of potted plants was 3% higher in January than in January 2018. In November and December 2018, turnovers for potted plants were between 1 and 2% higher than in 2017. At the end of 2018, prices were about 4% higher than in 2017. Turnovers for garden plants were also higher in January 2019 than in January 2018 (+6%).
