Turnover for ornamentals recovers, sales of garden plants higher than expected

06/07/2020

Due to the corona crisis, the export of ornamentals to many countries came to a standstill from mid-March onward. Consequently, export figures through May 2020 show large decreases for cut flowers and potted plants. Together, the shortfall is almost 15% compared to last year. Recovery is on its way, however, because various borders and trade channels have been opened again. In May, turnover for potted plants, which in April also fell back substantially, was even 3 million euros higher over last year.

Sales of garden plants were even above expectations for May (+20%). Because sales of garden plants are aimed more at the domestic market than cut flowers and house plants, the negative effects of the corona measures were limited. Garden centres in the Netherlands remained open. Favourable weather conditions, compulsory working from home and the available time many people had to work in the garden led to higher turnovers.
