Increased retail prices for pork and vegetables; largest decrease for potatoes

25/01/2021

The consumer price for pork increased by 2% in October and November 2020. Vegetable prices also increased by 2%. The retail price for beef decreased by 2%, for fruit by 3% and for potatoes the decrease was no less than 8%. Consequently, potatoes are 16% cheaper in November over the previous year. Prices for bread, dairy, eggs and poultry meat remained more or less the same in October and November. The retail prices for eggs, milk and beef still remain at a high level.

Pig farmers, however, are confronted with price drops. Pig prices dropped by 6% over the months October and November 2020 and are even 32% lower than a year previously. Although selling prices for processors in this industry did not decline in this period, the price level is 23% lower over last year, due to the large supply on the European market. A drop in consumer prices may be expected.

Potato growers and beef farmers also have to deal with considerably lower revenues. The industry offers a diverse picture. For instance, the dairy and meat processing industries saw a recovery in revenues due to an increase by 2% over the last months, but poultry processing revenues dropped by 4%.
