Rising retail prices, with the exception of the price of poultry meat

21/05/2024

In the months of February and March, the price of beef rose by 4% and the prices of bread, potatoes, milk, eggs, pork, fruit and vegetables rose by 1%. Only the price of poultry meat fell by 2%. All prices are still at a high level.

The supply chains of poultry meat, beef and pork show also higher prices than in January. In the poultry meat chain, selling prices for livestock farmers and slaughterhouses increased by around 2%; In the beef chain, the selling price increased by more than 1% for the slaughterhouse and with 5% for the livestock farmer. The downward trend also reversed in the pork chain and prices have started to rise. The slaughterhouse prices are 4% higher than in January and the price for livestock farmers is 6% higher. A lower supply on the European market affects the price developments in these chains.

Although the price of bread rose, as did the selling price for industrial bakeries, growers saw a significant drop in the price of wheat. The yield prices of the potato processing industry and the dairy industry were 5% and 1% lower respectively than in January.

This information comes from the bimonthly explanation of the food price monitor of Wageningen Economic Research and CBS.
