Drop in export of ornamentals and auction turnover continues in May |

Although up to and including May 2022, the exports of flowers and plants were higher than the previous year, the rate of increase is declining. Up until March the increase in the export value was about 3%. However, after five months this growth rate dropped to about 2%. These results appear from the figures published by Floridata, commissioned by the Dutch Association of Wholesalers in Floricultural Products (VGB). Also, the auction turnovers reported by Royal Floraholland of cut flowers, potted plants and garden plants grown in the Netherlands show large decreases for April and May.
Both in April and May, auction turnover of cut flowers grown in the Netherlands was lower than a year previously. While this turnover was still limited in April (-6%), in May it decreased further (-14%). In May, prices dropped by more than 18%. Due to a 5% increase in the number of products sold, the decline in turnover remained limited. Turnover of potted plants grown in the Netherlands continued to decline in 2022. After three months, turnover was slightly above last year's, but at the end of May the cumulative turnover was already more than 4% below that of 2021. This decline is primarily caused by fewer numbers sold. Turnover at the Royal FloraHolland flower auction continued to decline in April and May. In April, turnover dropped by more than 18%; in May, at 6% the decline remained subdued. This decrease in turnover was due to lower numbers sold in April (-17%) and a strong price drop in May (-8.7%) over last year. |
